Hillside Cemetery

This cemetery, located in the northern section of High Street, is filled with Eastport's heritage, men and their families who sailed the seas, British and American soldiers and sailors, businessmen and common men and women. If you're lucky, you'll be here at a time when John "Terry" Holt is giving a tour. Ambling around reading the headstones and enjoying the view can be very interesting and relaxing.

"In 1818 the town of Eastport felt a need to have a new burying ground, as the old one at Little's Cove was eroding away. They purchased a modest piece of land from two Boston merchants for $500. The oldest gravestone dates from 1800 and is believed to have been transplanted from Robbinston. The cemetery has had several periods of expansion and on occasion acted as a park. As many as three tombs were above the ground and were used throughout most of the 19th century." [The Eastport Walk-About]

Walk across High Street to the newer section where you can relax on one of the benches. Further exploration can be done on the "mountain" area behind the new section and along the dirt road toward the elementary school and up on that "mountain". This view from behind the elementary school is breathtaking.
