Campobello Island, New Brunswick: The Roosevelt Campobello International Park was established January 22, 1964 by the United States and Canada to honor the memory of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who first came to vacation at Campobello in 1883 when he was one year old. The Roosevelt Cottage and surrounding homes are a small part of the entire park. At the Visitors Center you can obtain materials which will explain the treasures you can explore not only in these homes but also in the rest of the 2,800-acre park. Park roads and walking trails afford you the opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. Picnic areas are scattered along the way.
If you'd like to see and feel the power of the ocean, be certain to drive or hike to Liberty Point. Usually the surf will crash on the rocks. The lighthouse at West Quoddy Head State Park in Lubec, Maine can be plainly seen, as well as the cliffs of Grand Manan Island. Seals and maybe even a whale will frolic nearby. If you are extremely early, you can watch the sun rise out of the ocean.
Herring Cove Provincial Park, with the mile long Herring Cove Beach, golf, and camping, abuts the international park. The Roosevelt family enjoyed swimming and picnicking here. The hot sand helps to make the water temperature almost tolerable.
Do not miss Friars Head on the left before the Roosevelt compound. From the observation platform you can see Eastport, Lubec, most of Cobscook Bay, and some of Passamaquoddy Bay. From East Quoddy Head Lighthouse at the far end of Campobello you'll see the Bay of Fundy.
You'll find many other sites to explore on Campobello. You can drive the 42 miles from Eastport to Campobello, crossing through Customs in Lubec, or you can take the ferry at 167 Water Street from Eastport to Deer Island (Customs officer there.) and then on to Campobello. If you have a dog traveling with you, you may be required to show proof of rabies vaccination. Details of many of their treasures can be found at their web site.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
