New Brunswick Ferry: From late June through mid September a reasonably priced ferry service at 167 Water Street connects Eastport to Deer Island and then to Campobello Island. Even though it is usually used as a way to get from one place to the other for vehicles and passengers, it is also enjoyable as a way to see the bay first hand. Hop aboard alone or with your bicycle to take the ride with or without visiting at Deer Island and Campobello. Mountain bikes can be rented daily or weekly from Tidal Trails.
What will you see on the trip? The Old Sow with her piglets, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere, is on the route. About two hours before high tide this whirlpool is most active as the waters of the ocean push their way up into the St. Croix River and the bays that surround Eastport. During this time, twice a day, the currents bring a rich supply of euphausiids and copepods, small crustacea, to the surface, attracting numbers and varieties of birds, especially gulls. Seals and porpoises and occasionally whales frolic along the way.
The ferry schedule operates on Atlantic Time, fares Canadian dollars:
