Eastport Picnic Area: This picnic area is located at the end of Drummond Road off of Route 190 by the new highway garage. Drive down the gravel road to an open area where you can park your vehicle. This was formerly the city owned Eastport campground, now being reclaimed as a gathering place. From here you can look across the water or the mudflats, depending upon the tide, to the Old Toll Bridge Road area. Matthews Island is on your left; the Route 190 scenic turnout is on your right. This is a good location to have a picnic while you use your binoculars to explore the activities in the area. You may see the eagles that feed here. You will certainly see a variety of other birds that nest and feed here.
A walk along the beach to the left will lead you toward Matthews Island. Proceed cautiously, always aware of the mudflats and the tides. Common sense will tell you if you should turn back. You may need boots. It may be safer to enter at the end of the airport runway or to park at the end of Deep Cove Road and walk through the field to the beach. It is possible, however, to reach Matthews Island. From the beach on the far side of Matthews Island you'll have a spectacular view of Cobscook Bay. Across the water are Lubec, Pembroke, and Perry. A number of small islands dot the bay. Don't forget the tides. At low tide it appears that Matthews Island is affixed to Eastport, but this is an island at high tide. Be certain that you have plenty of time before high tide to safely return.
You could also decide to explore Cobscook Bay by boat, arranging with Tidal Trails for a tour. Visit them on Route 1 on the Pembroke / Perry line or call them at: 726-4799. In addition, they rent tandem kayaks so that you could explore Cobscook Bay with a friend, landing on islands for further investigation. However you decide to explore this area, your tour will be memorable.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
