Shackford Head State Park: The entrance road to Shackford Head State Park (summer) and Shackford Head State Park (winter) is on Deep Cove Road just before the "Boat School." It's a short distance to the parking area and the start of the trail into the 95-acre coastal woodland. The main trail is an easy one-mile walk, some uphill, to a spectacular panoramic view from one of Eastport's "mountains." Campobello is on the left, Lubec straight ahead, and Cobscook Bay to the right. Cameras and binoculars are a must. Picnics are pleasant. While you rest on the "mountain," seals can be seen frolicking in the water and eagles are often soaring overhead. It is a special treat to watch from here if a ship is being loaded at Estes Head. Even if a large cargo ship isn't docked, you can see the new pier and the warehouses. Smaller boats may be at the nearby dock at Heritage Aquaculture. They will be unloading salmon to be processed at this local facility. The activity around several salmon farms in Eastport and Lubec can also be seen.
The side trails lead closer to the ocean. If you start your hike about three hours after high tide, you'll be able to spend pleasant hours exploring the coastal areas. This can be a more strenuous hike but it is possible to traverse most of the three-mile coastline. The Broad Cove side is the easiest. You can walk across the field at the parking area or take the first trail to the left off the main trail.
It has been reported that 104 plant species have been found in the park, along with nests from 28 different bird species. You will notice that here, as in most of Eastport, insects are at a minimum. Take the time to see and hear what is around you. The wind will most likely serenade you as you walk and relax.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
