Sunrise: The sun rises very early in Eastport, even earlier on the eastern shore of Campobello. During July and August the light from the sun permeates the darkness at about 3:30 a.m., with the sun rising over Campobello shortly after 4:30. It is best to experience this phenomenon from an outdoor location such as the downtown Breakwater, the "mountain" at Shackford Head, or the beach at Sea Street. You want to be able to feel and hear, as well as see, this spectacular occurrence. It's as though nature is gradually rousing herself from a deep sleep. As the sun peeks over Campobello, it seems to awaken the birds, the water, and the wind. Try to allow each of your senses to absorb as much of the experience as possible. The colors of the sunrise change for each season and each day. No matter how many sunrises you watch, each will be different in colors and intensity. Even the red "sailors take warning" sunrise is visually beautiful. You'll experience a variety of sights, sounds, and feelings.
As you absorb the sunrise, Eastport starts to come alive for the day. The Coast Guard members jog along the streets; fishermen arrive at the Breakwater to board their boats for the day; salmon feed is loaded for delivery to the pens; divers check their tanks; and the grill is heated at the WaCo Diner. Just like the sunrise, these are the normal activities each morning in Eastport, no matter which season. Each morning is the same in its predictability; each morning is different in its unpredictability. Enjoy each moment as the beauty surrounds you.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
