Boat School: The Washington County Technical College, Marine Technology Center, commonly called the " Boat School," is located at 16 Deep Cove Road, just after the entrance road to Shackford Head State Park (winter) and Shackford Head State Park (summer). At its inception in 1969 in Lubec as the first boat school in the United States, moving to Eastport in 1978, the concentration was wooden boatbuilding. The specialized classrooms and labs are clustered within sight of Cobscook Bay. It uses the waterfront facilities of the former seaplane base in Deep Cove. Today in its large classrooms and labs with waterfront facilities, it is recognized around the world as a leader in a variety of marine professions. This boat launch area at Deep Cove is public. Try to park your vehicle so that it does not interfere with the "Boat School" activities. This is a delightful area for enjoying the sunset.
Comprehensive training is available in the following areas: Wooden Boatbuilding, Marine Composites, Marine Mechanics, Aquaculture Technologies, Computer Technologies, and Marine Drafting. They provide training for the following certifications: Marine Electrical Technician and Certified Composite Technician. Soon they will have certifications in Marine Gas Engine and Marine Diesel Engine. They will also arrange programs for your company, held either in Eastport or at your location.
