Old Home Week: At the beginning of July for four or five days, Eastporters, families, and friends from near and far gather to celebrate many events: the Independence of the United States, high school reunions, family togetherness, marriages, and births. [It started with one day in 1820 to celebrate the end of the British occupation in 1818 after the War of 1812.] A peaceful city of less than 2000 people becomes a bustling city of about 12,000 celebrants. As many events as possible are crammed into the days and nights, with about $30,000. in costs financed entirely from donations.
The Navy sends a ship to enhance the fun. Many of the sailors who come from towns and cities throughout the United States marvel at the friendliness and acceptance that permeates Eastport. The visiting sailors join townspeople in codfish relays, the talent show, the Firemen's Muster, and the parade. Everyone enjoys tours of the ship, while the sailors become an integral part of the community. The sailors and the ship add to the patriotic feel.
Fireworks are a special part of this event. On July 1st, Canada Day, fireworks are part of the celebration on Deer Island Point. The fireworks in both Lubec and Eastport for the 4th can be enjoyed by all across the water. Boats from as far away as Nova Scotia are in the bay for the sights and sounds.
The most unforgettable part of the celebration is the 4th of July Parade, the largest in Maine. Floats, bagpipe bands, drum & bugle corps, marching bands, several Shriner units, and a variety of entries from the United States and Canada entertain the crowds along Washington and Water Streets. Details for most events can be found in The Quoddy Tides.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
