Boat Launches: There are several boat launches in the area. Remember that the tides change more than three feet each hour.
The busiest launch area is at the Breakwater, next to Rosie's hot dog stand. At high tide it is an easy launch, but the ramp is very steep at low tide. Many recreational users try to go in and out at half tide. Plan ahead. Vehicles and trailers can be parked in the Breakwater area or drive along the warehouse up the hill to the city owned lot on the right. In the summer on the north side of the Breakwater are finger piers where visitors can rent docking spaces from the harbor master for a overnight or longer and load and unload passengers. Lubec also has a marina where boaters can dock while enjoying lunch at a local restaurant.
At the "Boat School" on Deep Cove Road through the parking area is the boat launch area that was built in 1942 as part of the seaplane base at Crosby Beach. The ramp here is much more gradual, but it can be deceiving. Be sure to park your vehicle well up the hill. The tides are much greater than in most parts of the world. A short time ago, a kayaker returned to find his vehicle filled with water. Luckily a tow truck, the police, and a number of onlookers were also there to assist. This is an excellent sunset viewing area.
Patrons at the Seaview Campground can use the launch and mooring facilities there. The public is welcome to use this boat launch. You must register and pay in the office before using, however. Boaters who wish to explore this side of Eastport along the St. Croix River across to Deer Island and St. Andrews may find the launches at Gleason's Cove in Perry (follow signs across from New Friendly Restaurant on Route 1) or along Route 1 in Robbinston to be more convenient.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
