S.L. Wadsworth & Son, Inc.: Known as both the Nation's oldest ship chandlery and Maine's oldest retail business, this store at 42 Water Street, offers hardware, history, marine items, and nautical gifts. If you need something, ask. It may be stored upstairs or can easily be ordered from a distributor. In 1818, when the Treaty of Ghent returned Eastport to the United States, the last U.S. land held by Great Britain, Samuel B. Wadsworth, son of General Peleg Wadsworth of Revolutionary War fame and uncle of poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, founded this business which is presently operated by the 6th generation. Along with hardware, they carry a good supply of local charts and Maine-made nautical items. Eastport T-shirts, hats, and sweatshirts are a specialty. Open six days a week from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 853-4343.
