Eastport Gallery: During the early 1980s, a group of area artists organized to exhibit their art in a combined display. They used the Unitarian Society Meeting House, the old Masonic building, and several other places for their early exhibits. In the mid-1990s, this artists'cooperative became the Eastport Gallery at 69 Water Street. The two-story building houses a continually changing variety of subjects created in several mediums by area artists. Special shows, highlighting an individual artist or an individual topic, are held throughout the summer. Most of the works displayed in the gallery can be purchased. There is also a gift area in the rear of the first level. Contact them at 853-4166.
David Orrell, a former teacher who has retired year-round to Eastport, is one of the artists in the cooperative. Many of his paintings depict the angular nature of the buildings in Eastport. Some contain stylized local people outside the buildings. He explains his other artistic techniques in the Eastport video, available at The Tides Shop. David is often the leader in programs arranged at the gallery.
In the 1920s and 30s, George Pearse Ennis conducted summer sessions of his New York City Grand Central School of Art in Eastport. Among those associated with this school were: Robert Craig, a teacher from Spencer, Indiana, who retired to Eastport in 1941 and lived until May 10, 1971, age 87, and Edmund Schildknecht, a teacher from Chicago, who retired to Eastport in 1957 and lived until May 30, 1985, age 86. Illustrator Jack Frost was born in Eastport on December 22, 1915 and lived until October 22, 1997, age 81. Art and Eastport are compatible with longevity. The works of many early artists may be enjoyed in the "Art" section of the Tides Institute.
