Quoddy Maritime Museum: When Dexter Cooper, a power project engineer, visited Campobello in 1912, he was fascinated by the power of the tides. He imagined a power project that would be beneficial to both Canada and the United States and continued a long battle to see his dream realized. Cooper was a consultant for the project when on July 4, 1935, 15,000 people celebrated as Major Phillip B. Fleming turned the soil at a ceremony to begin construction of the Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Project. Because of financing problems, construction ended in August 1936, but the causeways that connect Moose Island to Carlow's Island and Pleasant Point are completed parts of this project. Quoddy Village was built to accommodate the workers needed for this project. Quoddy Village was later used for the National Youth Administration and then as a military training base for the Seabees in World War II. Today the homes in Quoddy Village are privately owned.
The Quoddy Maritime Museum, 70 Water Street, houses the model constructed for this tidal project. The model and the building are presently under extensive renovation, progressing as donations are collected. Photographic displays detail the tidal project and other historic Eastport events. Volunteers selling local crafts, paintings, books, and small antique items staff the gift shop as part of the fund raising effort. They have a display of tourist information.
