Fog, Sea Smoke, & Clouds: Carl Sandburg's poem The Fog describes the Chicago fog: "THE fog comes on little cat feet." It's much different in Eastport, especially when it quickly rolls through the Lubec Narrows and almost instantaneously blankets the bay. It's a phenomenon that will hold you spellbound unless you happen to be on the water in a boat. Then it can be frightening as you suddenly lose both the sights of your surroundings and your sense of direction.
Fog usually forms at night when the warmth of the earth radiates into the clear air, cooling the lower layers of air. If this air is humid enough, the water vapor in it begins condensing into tiny water droplets that float in the air - fog. When the sun rises, the fog may "burn off." In Eastport fog often also forms during the day, appearing like a large column of smoke rolling across the bay. The foghorn at Dog Island will continually wail to warn those ashore and on the water.
Sea smoke is a winter phenomenon. When cold, dry air blows over warmer water, some of the water evaporates into the air, mixes with the cooler air, and forms tiny droplets. These are seen as spirals rising from the water on a cold morning. It is very cold, below zero degrees, when the sea smoke is so thick and rises so high that the view of Campobello Island across the bay is obscured.
Eastport clouds are different in a variety of ways, as their colors, shapes, sizes, and functions change. Storm and fair weather clouds languish or scoot across the skies. Take the time to enjoy the shapes, imagining the animals, people, etc. they resemble. Doing this is called nephelococcygia.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
