Tides, Time Line, & Currents: As you gaze across the water from the Eastport Breakwater, there is an imaginary line that divides Atlantic (Canadian) Time from Eastern (US) Time. Be aware that these time zones may overlap and become confusing. The ferry runs on Atlantic Time; the tide table in The Quoddy Tides is in Atlantic Time. Both Canadian and US radio and television stations are common in the area, each using their own time zone. Be on time, not an hour early or late.
The tides change each six plus hours: two high tides, two low tides each day, at least three feet per hour. Find a frame of reference such as one of the pilings near the Breakwater. You can watch a water line as the tide rises and falls. About twice a month, at full moon and new moon, the Earth, moon, and sun are in a straight line, and the gravitational tug of the sun is added to that of the moon. At such times, flood tides rise highest on the shore, dislodging debris into the bay, and ebb tides fall lowest. Further up the Bay of Fundy the difference can be 50 feet, here as much as 28 feet. These are called spring tides. Twice a month when the Earth, moon, and sun form a right angle, the difference in the tides is the smallest. This is called neap tides.
If you are out on the water in a boat, you'll clearly see and feel the effects of the current. From the shore try to find an object that is floating in the current. Especially at spring tides, debris and logs that have dislodged from the beaches float rapidly along with the current. Underneath the Fish Pier, the home of the tugboats, the currents whirl around the granite and along the shore. The tides and currents work to refresh the ocean in Eastport each day.
Many locations in Eastport have free copies of a map detailing the Eastport/Lubec Quoddy Loop vicinity. Carry one with you. This map details roads and ferry routes connecting the entire area. You'll enjoy each of these day trips more fully if you have a camera and binoculars always at hand. At every turn you have the opportunity for a moose to appear, an eagle to soar overhead, or some other breathtaking sight to awaken your senses. Many days you'll want a sweater or sweatshirt within easy reach. Bring along water and food so you'll have the freedom to explore in every direction.
