Greater Eastport Ecumenical Churches Association |
|
History GEECA began in 1991 with the revival of an Ecumenical Clergy Association in Eastport. In 1995, the group formally incorporated as the Greater Eastport Ecumenical Clergy Association, a not-for-profit corporation in Maine and was awarded 5013c status by the IRS. In 2002 the group voted to change its name to the Greater Eastport Ecumenical Churches Association and elected Helen Earley as its first lay President. Membership GEECA is open to anyone interested in its activities. Each Church in Greater Eastport is encouraged to be represented on its Board by a member of the clergy or designated delegate and one lay member of the congregation. Purpose GEECA has been formed to advocate and enable a Christian response to the social and spiritual needs of our communities and to build relationships, understanding and mutual support among the churches of these communities. GEECA is incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in the State of Maine. This is to provide a legal basis for the churches collectively to sponsor activities within the community. Current Works of GEECA The Labor of Love Food pantry in Quoddy Village is sponsored by GEECA and supported by the churches and the community at large. The pantry is normally open on Tuesday mornings 9-11. GEECA members also organize periodic communal worship services (i.e., the Good Friday Pilgrimage, Advent Lessons and Carols Service, an All Souls-All Saints Service), sponsors the Soup and Sermon series held each Monday during Lent (12:05 PM St. Joseph-St. John Parish Hall, 11 Chapel Street, Eastport), and helps to coordinate the Christmas Turkey Basket project.
